Altarpiece of the main altar

Pala dell’Altare maggioreThe large altarpiece of the Main Altar was made in 1904 by Francesco Cherubini, a painter from Ancona who at the time belonged to the group of "historical painters" such as Bigioli or Podesti of whom he was a pupil. The painting depicts Saint Antoninus from Apamea, patron of Polverigi, genuflectd on the slopes of a hill near a spring, while he has the vision of the Holy Family surrounded by angels and cherubim. The Saint points out to the Virgin and Child the village of Polverigi, lit up by the midday sun, seen from Baiana quarter, ancient historical settlement of our Municipality. The painting, made with a simple diagonal composition, bright colors and quick brushstrokes, already foreshadows to some innovative boosts that will give rise to the movement "In Arte Libertas" of which Cherubini was a representative before going to Venice where he died ninety-three years old in 1960, after a long artistic season that made him one of the greatest landscape author and a lyrical celebrator of St. Mark Square.
